The Performance Talk Chapter
Bosses in Other Industries can Help You

I haven't been able to discover a book about how to find and choose a mentor that are aimed at a new manager. There seem to be quite a few "find a mentor" resources for women and for people who are starting a business and an Amazon search should turn them up. There are some resources on the web that may be helpful.

"Seven Tips for Finding a Great Mentor" is an excellent short article on the topic.

I also recommend the article from CareerJournal.com called "Why Finding a Mentor is Only the Beginning."

There are formal mentoring programs at many companies. There are also "matchmaking" services that promise to set you up with a mentor. I suggest these only as a last resort. The best mentoring relationships appear to happen outside of formal program structures.

Three Star Leadership is leadership that gets a star rating from three key groups: your boss, your peers and your subordinates. Click here to learn more about Three Star Leadership.
