Reader Comments about Performance TalkHere are some comments about Performance Talk from people who've already read it. Don Blohowiak is an author on leadership topics. He also writes the Leadership Now blog. Don gave Performance Talk a rave review. Here's his summary. "Performance Talk won’t hurt to read, won’t insult anyone’s intelligence, and will impart some very useful lessons along the way. This little story book — by a former U.S. Marine and corporate manager and trainer for big city police and fire supervisors — has the ring of truth, believable scenarios, and practical information in it to help a manager, new and old, be a better boss. If there’s a new manager in your life, skip the dull tomes, the anecdotes, cookbooks and Obi-Wans. Give ’em a good head-start with a little Performance Talk." You can read Don's full review by clicking here. "Performance Talk" is a super read rich in content. In the story portion you can feel the emotions and issues as well as understand them. The review points and resources give you more tools to understand how to use the principles in your own business." "There is no single responsibility that a supervisor has that will produce more dividends than the ability to help employees perform up to their potential. This book provides both the insight and the how-tos that will produce results that can be transferred directly to the bottom line." "Wally Bock has taken the most vital supervisory skill and made it easier to master. This book should be the "basic training" that all supervisors are required to complete before taking on the responsibility of leading others." "This book is geared for any supervisor. The new ones will learn immediately and the veteran supervisor will pick up some new information and use the book as a benchmark for his or her own skills." If you are in the business of managing people then this book is a must read. "Performance Talk" is easy reading, a little over a 100 pages, and a book you will not want to put down. This book needs to be in every Manager's tool box and should be required reading for ALL Supervisors regardless of the industry or profession they work in. "This stuff really works!" Wally Bock, a leadership consultant and author, has written an interesting and engaging book on performance. Unlike the hundreds, if not thousands, of books written on the topic of leadership, supervision and practical supervisory skills during the last fifty years, this book is both valuable as a text and as a continuing resource. Bock's book is certainly unique and a bit quirky. If you use the litmus test with business literature of "Was it useful?" than Bock's book passes the test. This short book may prompt change both in your individual development as well as the development of junior leaders. Managing people is difficult. Through story dialogue Bock's book introduces the reader to topics which strengthen management skills. Key points are absorbed without having to take notes or study the material. Reminders and resources highlight concepts and are located throughout this concise book. Performance Talk supplements other courses on management and self-development with a painless and easy to read format. Performance Talk is, in my view, a minor masterpiece, maybe even a future classic. For years I trained supervisors and first line managers all over the USA. So, I know whereof I speak. You capture, engage, and reveal every possible point of friction a new manager faces. You clarify the challenges new managers endure.
You delineate principles, postures, and practices that yield more effective performance by the manager and performance by subordinates. If you've got the book, why not send us your comment?
